Pores do not open and close
A pore is an opening in the skin that allows sebum (oil) to flow to the surface and provide essential moisture to the skin.
Fact: Pores do not have any muscles and cannot open and close. However, pores can get clogged with dead skin cells and pollutants that make them seem large or "open".
The quick solution? Exfoliate. Exfoliation helps buff away dead skin cells and keeps pores 'looking' smaller and cleaner. But it is not going to entirely fix the problem.
For a long-term solution, you need to start on a regular skincare routine with good quality products.
Here's the basic things you can do to keep your skin looking it's best and avoid unsightly clogged pores:
-
Cleanse your skin morning and night. Don't use very hot or very cold water, because it brings blood vessels to the surface and removes the natural oils that protect your skin.
-
Use a tonic after cleansing to remove traces of cleanser and make up that may be left on the skin. Choose the tonic to suit your skin type.
-
Moisturize morning and night no matter how oily your skin is. This balances oils and refuels dry areas of your skin to give it an even texture all over. Exposure to the sun also causes open pores so use a moisturizer with built-in sun protection.
-
An exfoliant is necessary to keep the other products working their best and keeps dead skin cells and dirt building up in your pores. Use 2-3 times per week.
-
Use a facial masque according to your skin type twice a week, preferably after exfoliating
This routine will keep your skin at its healthiest so it can repair itself. Your pores will now appear smaller.
If you are prone to clogged pores and pimples, resist the urge to pick at or squeeze your pores: this can stretch and scar them
For teenagers, treating acne and other skin conditions properly is the key to good-looking skin for the rest of your life. To do this, you need to use good quality skin care products that don't strip the skin and promise instant results
