Self-diagnosis of your skin type

Dry skin

Dry skin is often hereditary but can also be caused by environmental exposure, poor diet and harsh products that strip the skin. Fine lines and wrinkles are more noticeable on dry skin, so it is important that you protect and nourish it with a good moisturiser, sunscreen and treatment products such as serums.

Normal to combination skin

Combination skin is the most common skin type. The T-zone (forehead, nose and chin) produces excess oil and occasional blemishes while less oil is produced on the cheeks, eyes and neck areas. Lifestyle, stress, diet, makeup and the environment contribute to the imbalance. Climate changes can also cause combination skin to be drier during the cold months and oilier during the warmer months.

Oily skin

Oily skin will look shiny and the pores appear large and open. This type of skin condition is often regarded as a teenage problem. This is a myth. Oiliness can affect all ages. Another myth regarding oily skin is that it doesn't need moisturising.  A good quality lightweight moisturiser (one that doesn't block pores) will help correct the imbalance and improve your skin tone dramatically.

Remember that skin types can change with the seasons.  For example, in winter, skin can be drier than normal. In summer, it can produce more oil. Medication, lifestyle and a change in environment can also make a big impact. So take time to diagnose your skin regularly and review your skin care programme based on what your skin is doing at the time
